Partly cloudy, hazy sun, cool and damp at 50 degrees (10 degrees Celsius) and 83% humidity. Need to pick up a few things at the grocery store but finding it hard to get moving.

In much more interesting news, a new edition of Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn is due out -- except it will be missing two words, and they're exactly the ones you think. I haven't read past the first page of comments (the article is in Entertainment Weekly), but the majority on that page are surprisingly civil.

HI! Well, transfer of Important Things has not been completed, because I have a few questions. I may call the Mr, so I can install these last couple things. Hm. But! I got all the money software completed, and all I have left is installing iTunes and KeePass, and transferring the music, which I should be able to do via Zippy.

And I'm calling it the Beast because this thing is HYOOGE--it's almost a 16-inch widescreen, and damn, these widescreen laptops are enormous. :)

Why one would want to leave those words out is a mystery to me. That's how people spoke at the time. it should be preserved, in all it's racist ugliness. What are they going to scour for offensive material next? Mein Kampf?

I'm with you. Rewriting history isn't going to stop people from repeating it, quite the opposite.
In happier news, after a MONTH I finally have telephone service in my new apartment. It turns out the first telephone technician didn't connect the wires properly in the main panel and whoever installed the wires in the building didn't connect them to my apartment. The tech warned I'd be sent a bill and I said fine, I'll just give it to my landlord. Did I mention that all of the doorknobs are installed upside down? I think the light fixture above my dining room table is installed upside down as well.

:D I'm sorry, but in the context of "I don't have to deal with it" this is incredibly funny. What else is awry, and did you perhaps unwittingly move into a deliberately surrealist flat? I'd expect the hot and cold taps to be reversed also, and possibly for the bath to be in the kitchen, and of course for the doors to be locked one must unlock them...

Well, there's this switch in the kitchen and I can't figure out what it does. It looks like a light switch but when I press it on and off nothing happens. At least nothing I've noticed yet ;)

Heh. It probably turns one of the plugs on and off, but the question is "which one?" and "where?". I have a plug like that in my front room -- it controls the plug in the far corner of the room so you can turn a floor lamp on or off from the door.

I know! And this guy is a Twain scholar, which makes it even more strange to me. I simply can't imagine that Sam Clemens would approve of this bit of editing. He claims he's "updating" the book so that more teachers will be able to use them in classrooms, but several of the commenters in the EW article said they were teachers (some of them in the Deep South, nonetheless) and that they'd never had any problem teaching it. I mean, it's pretty much the entire point of the book -- that the reader comes to see Jim as a human being in his own right, and not the ugly word that people keep calling him.
