Dear Pro Author:

I was thinking about buying your book today, so I read the first few pages on Amazon. I regret to inform you that the ocean does not actually "team" with fish. Perhaps one day I will purchase your book, but it will not be today.

Sincerely yours,

A Cranky Reader

Dreamed last night that I watched the Season 8 opener of House. The series had moved to the cable channel Showtime, and House had moved to Australia. Or New Zealand, I'm not sure which (sorry, Aussies and Kiwis on my f-list). Anyway, he had become a bike messenger (as in bicycle, yes, I know) and an artist. He had a girlfriend, although I never saw her, and he gave her a fire opal pendant. Also he sent a painting to Wilson, who was apparently still in New Jersey. And, this being Showtime, there was a full-frontal shot of House's wang. Which, may I say, is a very nice wang. I am not making any of this up; my subconscious was. IDEK, chiclets.

So. Need to go to the grocery store today. I'd much rather go to Australia. Or New Zealand. :-D

JFC, what the hell is it with politicians and their peckers?

Rep. Anthony Weiner says yep, it was me all along.

ETA that comments on this post are now frozen.

NY Times appoints its first-ever female executive editor. The photo on the front page is of the guy she's replacing.

Good one, NY Times.

ETA that now the story has dropped "below the fold," the photo has been replaced with a shot of her. And the guy she's replacing. *g*

Also ETA: Nobel Prize-winning author V.S. Naipaul says some monumentally stupid things about women writers.

Beautiful weather today -- clear blue skies, a light wind out of the north ... although it's already 80 degrees (26.7 degrees Celsius). Got a lot done yesterday (before the storms), need to do more stuff today.

As for the continuing fallout over The Episode, I noticed this Twitter exchange last night.

Anyway. Hope everyone is having a good Wednesday. :-)

Cold and grey, slight possibility of a little sleet and/or frozen rain. 30 degrees (-1.1 degrees Celsius), with a gusty wind out of the north. Have brought plants back inside (Chango helped by racing back and forth in the backyard with a ball).

Started reading Colossus last night -- so far it is very good, although I did have a "Dear Author" moment when Hiltzik talked about Spanish explorers (Francisco Coronado's men) seeing the Grand Canyon, and then mentioning about twenty pages later that Joseph Christmas Ives would be "the white man who finally located the Grand Canyon." Er. I think he means that Ives was the first to find the canyon's downstream entrance, but, er.

... and now the sun is trying to come out. Hm.

Don't make me get out my decoder ring.

Reports of her speeches were printed in newspapers around the world. The Madras Herald printed Pearl's picture in early May under the headline "exfh (odd-shaped symbol like two tadpoles) bY 3 XeXfl 3 ha g" with a caption attributing the attacks on her to "her attitude of fairness and justice toward darker races."

Is that Unicode? Unicode with real Tamil thrown in? Alphabet soup with real Tamil thrown in? How would I even know?

At a loss,
Your Reader

I do not think this sentence conveys the information you think it conveys.

Two years later his older brothers started enlisting one after another in the Union Army to fight the Yankees, leaving only the three youngest -- Hiram, Absalom, and Frank, age eleven, nine, and seven -- to work the farm under their father for the duration of the war.

Bolding mine, for emphasis.

When someone vomits, upchucks, ralphs, throws up or otherwise drives the big white bus, they are not "wretching."

Trust me on this one.
