Hello, August
Aug. 1st, 2018 10:50 pmFinished Thomas Pierce's The Afterlives, and was ... dissatisfied. This was a book that should've been right up my alley -- a family mystery from the 1920s, is there life after death, the recurrence of themes and echoes of the past, a reclusive scientist building a miracle machine -- but while there was a lot of the story I liked, overall it just didn't work for me. I would actually still recommend this book because I think the kernel of the story is such a great idea.
Anyway, now reading Meg Howrey's The Wanderers, which is about three astronauts (an American woman and two guys, a Russian and a Japanese) training for the first manned mission to Mars, and the toll it takes on them and their families. This is sharply written, with some acid wit that has caused me to make undignified snorting sounds at times.
In other news, there is basil growing in the mint pot. The actual basil pot is about fifteen to twenty feet away from the mint. Squirrels? Birds? I suspect the culprits may be wrens, who love to poke about in the plant pots and could conceivably transfer some basil seeds on their feathers or their feet.
