The heating element for the oven arrived today, and it took Mister Nightdog_barks and myself over an hour to install the thing because the four screws that connect the electricity and hold the element in place were about the size of NANOBYTES. Omfg. But we finally got them all in, and now the oven is ready for baking again.

Watched Darkest Hour last night on HBO and really enjoyed it -- even with that heartstring-tugging, totally fictitious bit with the Underground. Thought everyone was very good, and that Gary Oldman was quite amazing as Churchill. Also liked Ben Mendelsohn as George VI and Stephen Dillane as Viscount Halifax. Afterwards I disappeared down a Wikipedia rabbit hole reading about Anthony Eden, who had a life marked by tragedies and ... colorful politics.

A bit more than halfway through Grant. The Civil War has just ended.

The Civil War has ended in your book, but in some parts of the country, it is still being fought. :-P

I have a MAGNIFICENT 7 icon now, so I guess I'm hip-deep into it. Still haven't watched any episodes.

I KNOW that's right. I was reading last night about Andrew Johnson (vile pissant that he was) undermining Reconstruction practically from the word "go," and I just wanted to scream. I mean, nobody can say for sure what might have happened if Lincoln had lived, but Chernow comes straight out and says Johnson was the worst possible luck for the nation. The revocation of the "forty acres," the formation of the Black Codes, it's all happening right there because Johnson was a thin-skinned, vindictive little man whose natural allies were racists. And I knew all this, but it never stops being INFURIATING. White takes care of white. All the time. Throughout history. :-P
