Date: 2018-08-22 01:16 am (UTC)I KNOW that's right. I was reading last night about Andrew Johnson (vile pissant that he was) undermining Reconstruction practically from the word "go," and I just wanted to scream. I mean, nobody can say for sure what might have happened if Lincoln had lived, but Chernow comes straight out and says Johnson was the worst possible luck for the nation. The revocation of the "forty acres," the formation of the Black Codes, it's all happening right there because Johnson was a thin-skinned, vindictive little man whose natural allies were racists. And I knew all this, but it never stops being INFURIATING. White takes care of white. All the time. Throughout history. :-P
