Beautiful weather. Bright sun, not a cloud in the sky, 89 degrees (31.7 degrees Celsius).

Watched a Canadian movie last night -- Passchendaele. It wasn't bad. The romantic sidestory was pretty predictable, but I thought the film did a great job depicting the filth and utter horror of trench warfare. Paul Gross was okay, but I really liked Joe Dinicol as the kid who wants to prove himself a man (cliched, but still good) and Jim Mezon as the Major. The scene where he shames the young, draft-age men at the recruiting event ("Eyes wide open," he says, and smiles a cold, cold smile) was just awesomely done. He was absolutely terrific, and I will look for him again.

Working on the Riververse story and hope to have it up for real in a couple of weeks. :-)

Must run a couple of errands today. Also donated to Planned Parenthood this morning because of this jackass. Pathetic state of affairs is pathetic.

I'm still shaking my head over Rep. Akin's remarks, particularly his ignorance of basic biology. Just where did he come up with the idea that women can magically prevent conception in cases of rape?

From what I've been able to gather, Akins (R-State of Clueless) may have been channeling that old (AND CRAZY DISCREDITED) idea that a woman won't get pregnant if she doesn't have an orgasm. Ergo, a woman being "legitimately" raped would not have an orgasm, and would not get pregnant.

No, I am serious. Which of course raises all sorts of other questions about what he doesn't know. Where I am not going to go, because frankly that well is just too deep.

I suspect that it's not so much that he doesn't know, but that he prefers to believe what fits in with his parochial world view, which is exceedingly twisted and exceedingly narrow. And one of the Very Important Things the Republicans need to accomplish is to free all of those poor innocent white men of the burden of potentially being accused of rape by lying sluts. Think of the poor abused upper and middle class white men! They are the most oppressed and persecuted class ever! (Pardon me, I had to suppress the urge to vomit after writing that, but I have actually seen that precise claim from the more acephalic MRA assholes. It staggers belief.)

It astonishes me outright how incredibly socially and scientifically backward the Republican movement is in the U.S. (Before anyone jumps in with "moderate Republicans"blah, blah, I will circumvent with "Where are they? They're not the ones in power. Reactionary extremists are. And the moderates are doing nothing to dethrone them, so one must conclude that they *approve*.") It's frankly frightening to me that these people could gain control over the United States. Every time you think the citizens of a modern, educated, liberated, democratic nation could not be so xenophobic, so ignorant, so medieval, so misogynistic they spit up some new evil. And you know the ones that come to light are just the tip of the iceberg. "Legitimate" rape indeed! Apart from a biological understanding dating back to the 1700s, he's a *creep*. Who gives such an obvious monster power? Brrr.

Heh. Thank you for offering, but I don't tend to remember to use anything apart from my default icon. I try from time to time, because there are some beautiful, remarkable, or funny ones out there, but I tend to focus on the writing, not on the images. :D

And he was good in this movie! It was just that he was also the writer and director, and every time he turned around it was to make sure we the audience knew just how much manpain he was in because War and Killing. Plus he had people saying "okay" and "hey" a lot, and I'm ... not sure how common those expressions were in 1917. But good god he is easy on the eyes.

He is indeed a very pretty man - there are scenes in due South where he looks unreal. But yeah, when he wears 15 hats his acting tends to suffer a bit, which is why it's Slings and dS that made me a fan rather than, say, Men With Brooms. :P
