Sunny and warm, should get up to 101 today (38.3 degrees Celsius) although we are supposed to have a BIG break in the weather by Sunday. I cannot begin to say how welcome this will be.
Got one of these put in yesterday, except mine looks like this. Now I am one with the Borg. Except that, y'know, a Borg probably wouldn't feel like it had been kicked in the shoulder by a mule. Lucky for me I have the Good Drugs.
I have to say, though, that this was a much more positive experience than my lumpectomy (this was the second procedure under general anesthesia). It was in a different environment (a hospital instead of a day surgery center), and the nurses and doctors were way more congenial and less rushed. Also, the anesthesiologist must have done something differently, because waking up was more like ... well, waking up. From a natural sleep. It was all very interesting, and I sincerely hope none of you ever have to experience it. ♥
Still reading Jamrach's Menagerie, and it's very good. Also, I know I owe some of you comments and emails, and I'm so sorry I haven't gotten to that. Things have been kind of discombobulated lately. :-)
And now for something completely different: the legal tussle over who will own a Gypsy fortune-telling machine from 1906.

Date: 2011-09-02 07:57 pm (UTC)Today my uncle is having the tip of his toe amputated, and the doctor said he's not going to "close" it. I cannot imagine how that works and have decided to stop trying, it was making me queasy.
It's relatively cool here - the high on Wednesday was 9'C - but is supposed to be hot next week.

Date: 2011-09-02 08:42 pm (UTC)I've actually passed Virginia City, but didn't stop to visit it. Hopefully the machine ends up where the public can enjoy it, and not stashed away in some private horde.

Date: 2011-09-03 01:08 am (UTC)"Then the museum needs better volunteers. That guy won't be back for an hour."
"House --"
What, are you afraid I'm gonna make a wish and suddenly be all grown up? Little late for that." The nickel plinked its way into the machine's works, in a rolling series of hollow notes.
House pulled the handle, something chinked and gnashed within the machine, and then came a sound like ... like listening to a windstorm on a fading radio station. The hair stood up on Wilson's arms.
And the Human Voice spoke.

Wilson felt oddly relieved. "Come on," he said. "What did you expect to happen?" House didn't answer. "Come on," Wilson said again. "We'll go to Rosie's, I'll buy you a beer."
The two men walked away. Behind them, the gypsy was silent. A full minute passed before the creak and rattle of old gears sounded in the empty room. The gypsy moved, unoiled wooden joints squeaking. Her jaw moved up and down in a simulacrum of speech.
"Your wish is granted," she said.

I have a feeling it's pretty short. Whatever the hell it is.
