I finally managed to i.d. one of the tiny, completely nondescript winter birds that show up at our feeders this time of year. I'd been seeing these little, vaguely olive-greenish guys, but really, they basically had no other distinguishing features other than "They're little and olive-greenish." And then I happened to be looking at something else, and there they were. Meet the Orange-Crowned Warbler. Note the distinctive orange crown that OH BY THE WAY YOU CAN'T SEE AT ALL. :D

Also today I saw a red-tailed hawk circling in the sky -- it flew directly over Layla and myself in our backyard, as if to check us out and see what we were up to. *g* This is exactly what I saw; the photo is from this page.

And maybe it's because of that beautiful hawk that we've had more crow activity over the last few days. A couple of days ago there was a huge flock of crows in the air a few streets over, and yesterday a few crows flew over our heads in the backyard. Layla ran after them, barking, and leapt into the air, apparently because of the wind and cool temps and sheer canine joy at just being alive. She was so happy. XD

We saw lots of white-throated magpie-jays in Costa Rica, they're beautiful. Look like our blue jays but wearing a Mohawk!
