According to the NY Times, yesterday, at her home in Portland, Oregon. No specific cause, but her son said that she'd been in poor health for several months.

I was ten years old in 1968, when A Wizard of Earthsea came out, and I'd never read anything like it. LeGuin showed me that women could make maps, too. <3

Wizard of Earthsea and Tombs of Atuan were two of my favorite books as a child. Later I added Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed to that list. She was a giant.

I loved The Left Hand of Darkness. Just absolutely loved it. I mean, I would've been eleven or twelve years old when I read it, so I imagine I was missing out on some of the gender-switching plot, but I have never forgotten Genly Ai and his desperate journey across the ice, and his love for Estraven.
