Gah, so slow and logy today. More red wine than I should've last night, then stayed up too late, then woke up at about 4 in the morning and took forever to go back to sleep.

Meanwhile, in the What Did You Expect to Happen Department -- people try to walk on hot coals, get 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns. And people pay to do this. /o\

I just got back from donating blood. The technican had a Dora the Explorer sticker on his name badge, and for some reason I found that terribly attractive.

Goat guy! I saw the headline for that story somewhere today but I didn't read it. So a guy wearing a goat suit is wandering around with a herd of goats, and it's almost time for goat-hunting season.

He says the man may just be a complete loony wildlife enthusiast.

Fixed that for 'em. ;-)

I think they are talking mountain goats, because I can't imagine anyone hunting ... farm goats. :D

Oh I assumed they were wild mountain goats and not farm goats that you were referring to, I just didn't know that people hunted wild goats. As I said, it shouldn't surprise me that they do, I'd just never heard of it before.

To me it's the kind of activity that people engage in on "team-building" excursions, and I always want to stay as far away from those as is humanly possible.

An extreme distaste for team building exercises is why I've never sought a job with a large company. I'd get fired for sneering. :D

This is what I liked about being in the hospitality industry: "team-building" and other horrifying attempts to make the unlikeable likeable and encourage the unencouragable are virtually non-existent, in my experience at least.

People paid the fellow who ran a sweat lodge improperly and killed three people. It's always a bad idea to expropriate the spiritual practices of other cultures without proper understanding or preparation. and there's always someone trying to make money off it. There was a time when I likely could have firewalked in perfect safety (because I'd gone barefoot over very rough terrain for five months), but certainly not *now*. What idiot thinks that's exclusively about "willpower"? Coals are hot!

Heh. You know, I understand there's a supposedly "safe" way for people to firewalk at events like this, but I can't remember what it is. I think part of it may involve the coals being at a certain temperature -- something hot, and they look hot, but they're not actually that hot if you place your feet a certain way ... damn it, I'm going to have to look this up, aren't I?

... here's the Wikipedia entry, and yeah, part of it does involve letting the coals char for a specific amount of time. My bet is that the organizers of the Robbins event didn't let the coals burn long enough.

Still couldn't pay me to do it. :D

Same here, plus for complex reason I had to sleep on the floor, with just a comforter wrapped around me. Hope we both sleep better next time (which for me will start asap).

As for "and people pay for this", I remember when my advisor (almost two decades ago, but in the same town where I am now) saw an ad "Bungee Jumping: 150 Deutsche Mark". He refused to believe that anyone would pay to do something so dangerous, and added that, had he been younger, he would have been willing to jump for that amount of money.
At that time 150 DM = 180 thousand Italian liras.
