Rain, and lots of it, last night. The Big Airport south of here reported over four inches; the town to the north of us says three and a half. Whatever, it was a lot of rain, accompanied by lightning and thunder, some of which sounded like mortar rounds going off directly over our house. The plants on the deck seem to be okay (especially the tomatoes), but everything is drenched.
Finished Hari Kunzru's Gods Without Men last night, and all I can say is WOW. What an incredible, surreal journey, with a chilling, ambiguous ending. The roots of this book are definitely in David Mitchell's Ghostwritten and Cloud Atlas, with their shifting, intertwined time periods and storylines, but there are also the hints of other voices here -- writers like Martin Amis, Don DeLillo, William Gibson, Tom Wolfe, but Kunzru has his own, distinct voice and pulls it all together. The only reason I'm not giving this an A+ is because a couple of the storylines seemed extraneous, and I think could have been dropped for a tighter narrative. This is still an absolutely awesome read, and I can't recommend it highly enough. Two thumbs up and a solid A.
Another Fly Free WIP coming up ... and, oddly enough, it may contain a spoiler. *g*
