Sunday, and A Fic Rec

It's not 100 yet, but today is forecast to be the 37th straight day of 100+ temperatures. There is finally hope on the horizon -- the high-pressure system that's been sitting on top of the region for so long is expected to start drifting west late next week. A light breeze has begun blowing the last couple of days, clearing out some of the still, stale air. Also, in the Auguries Department, this morning I saw a pair of hawks wheeling in the sky, and when Mr. N cracked an egg for French toast, it was double-yolked.
Mr. N wants to make bread today, so have taken the yeast, sunflower seeds, and some bulgur out of the refrigerator to warm up. Still need to find the 10-grain mix. Or we could just use the bulgur.
Picked up The Hobbit last night, intending to read only the first chapter. Stayed for three.
The fic rec is not for a new story. It's from 2007, and it's one of those five-things fics. I re-read it late last night and was so glad I did. Full disclosure that the author is one of my own writing partners.

Date: 2011-08-07 09:07 pm (UTC)That is an interesting proposition! Presuming his biological dad wasn't the same strict martinet that John House was, I think House would have flourished without the physical abuse. On the other hand, his bio-dad ended up as a minister, so perhaps he was a Navy chaplain, which could've led to some intense arguments about God and a fractured relationship. Lots of possibilities. :-D

Date: 2011-08-07 08:33 pm (UTC)Supposedly it's only 89 F. today, but we can't really tell any difference. I spent several hours cleaning the carpet in the storage/exercise room in the garage and nearly broiled alive. The former residents used it as a weight room and we put the dogs and the gardening stuff in there.
Taiga has the best plot bunnies. I love the idea that House would have been different if his bio dad has raised him.

Date: 2011-08-08 02:18 am (UTC)I didn't re-read that fic last night, but tonight I think it will be just the medicine I need. My poor brain is about to overheat and cause me to blow a head gasket; a bit of rest and coolant is required.

Date: 2011-08-08 03:25 am (UTC)This time we added sunflower seeds, bulgur, and Bob's Red Mill 5-grain mix (which is oats, wheat, ground flax seed, triticale, rye, and barley). So that's actually 6 ingredients, but apparently they're not counting the flax seed as grain, which makes sense. We used a mix of whole wheat and unbleached all-purpose flour, and Fain's cane syrup for a bit of sweetener. The loaves look and smell wonderful.

Date: 2011-08-08 03:37 am (UTC)I've now let the dogs out for their pre-bedtime potty break and I need to give Biscuit her Vicodin (actually Tramadol) for her bad leg. Having some of that Spanish Grenache and pondering whether to head for the basement for a while to watch a bit of mindless TV.
