More beautiful weather, a little breezier than yesterday. Started reading Bill Bryson's At Home last night. Need to do some vacuuming, so thinking about turning the radio on for some classic rock.

In the meantime, here's a great slideshow of Japanese wildlife in a Hokkaido winter -- red-crowned cranes, whooper swans, Steller's sea eagles and many others.

Now I see why the cranes are so beloved by the Japanese. They are so elegant and beautifully austere with that black and white plumage.

It's coolish and sunny today -- a really lovely day. The vacuuming's done and I'm about to finish some laundry. After that I may do something really radical and rest! :D

I'm done with my vacuuming too -- I did the den, both bathrooms, a hallway, and part of the living room before the machine signaled the little foam-rubber filter was clogged, so I stopped, took it out and washed it. DOG HAIR IS A SIGN OF THE APOCALYPSE. :-D

We bought a few antique prints when we lived in Tokyo, and the one we love best is of a crane seeming to drop from the sky. The crane is white and black, the background (a tree trunk) is brown and grey, and the only spot of color is that stunning red patch on the back of the crane's head. I'll have to see if I can take a photo of it without glare.

I figure there's so much corgi and cat hair woven into the fibers of our carpet that it will never wear out. :-D

Some of those photos would make nice icons for a certain community we both know and love, especially some of single birds and that amazing sunset.

I wish you could smell the honeysuckle here today. The whole outdoors is perfumed with it.

For some reason we don't have a lot of honeysuckle up here -- it was all over the place when I was a kid, and we used to suck the nectar from the blossoms (my god, so sweet). Carolina jessamine (oh shut up, spellcheck, that IS the correct spelling) seems to be most common around here.

Some of those photos would make nice icons ...
