Cold, grey, occasional light rain. A very damp 45 degrees (7.2 Celsius). Lots of small birds in the backyard -- chickadees, goldfinches, juncos.

So here, have a photo of a real falcon taking on a high-flying kite on a string.

That's an amazing photo, and I really like that kite! We've had juncos, though I didn't know what they were. Corgiguy kept trying to describe "gray cardinals" to me, and now I know what he's talking about. The birdsong sound effects on that site are always such fun. The cats go crazy when they hear a bird "in the house." :D

The guys are gone to the movies, so I had a long soak in the bathtub and have done some housecleaning. We have a bottle of Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap that turned out to be too intense for bathing with, but it makes the house smell so nice.

We use Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap, diluted about 2/3 with water, in our foaming soap dispensers. It's fabulous! But you're right--you've got to dilute it some for most people-riffic applications.

It makes an awesome cleaner of non-people things. I spray the tough spots on the kitchen floor with white vinegar and then mop with a little Dr. Bronner's in a bucket of hot water. It's safe to use around the critters too, unlike Pine Sol or things with fake fragrances.

The weather is still icy here, but it's supposed to warm on Tuesday. I'm going to make chili.
That's a charming picture. Here, you funny looking featherless bird, let me show you how it's done.

The same way I make everything, very very simply! ;) I'm no cook. A can of crushed tomatoes, two cans of kidney beans, onion, fried hamburger, and a package of chili mix. Julia Childs would cry, but in my defense it's my mother's recipe (except she includes mushrooms) and I don't like my food to be very spicy.

My chili recipe would also make Julia Child cry. It's a can of chili beans, a can of Mexican-style diced tomatoes, and a half a pound of browned pork sausage. It's what I made when I first got married and was learning how to cook actual meals, as opposed to the occasional dish. Corgiguy imprinted on it like a baby duck and won't have it made any other way. :D

I've never heard of mushrooms in chili, but it sounds good. In Alabama, they eat chili over rice, which surprised me the first time I saw it.

If at all possible, make chili with deer or elk - the flavor is so much richer.
