Cloudy, warm, humid. 80 degrees (26.6 Celsius). It's already rained a couple of times this morning, and it looks like there's more on the way. Still, I have to go drop some bills and expense report blahblah (for Mr. N) off at the post office. It'll be good to get out, though. Chango is hiding in her den, heh.

Still reading Vindication, and now I want to read about the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution (Mary Wollstonecraft was living in Paris with her lover Gilbert Imlay during this time).

So. All for now.

ETA that here are our local weather radars. Lots o'red, yes. Not going anywhere until it eases on by.

Ah, so THAT'S where all our rain went. It's absolutely perfect weather here, so of course I must leave for work in 40 minutes.

Proud of myself for all I've gotten done this morning, though, I have to admit. Messes still abound, but I'm doing well. And making part-caff espresso.

Oh, and I thought of you and of Jackal yesterday, at the barn. I was hanging out for a while with Twilight after her teeth were done and she was still sedated, in one of the few stalls at the farm. And there were a pair of little brown mice coming out of hiding and scampering, sniffing all around the edges of the stall. And a barn swallow on the stall partition, cheeping, and me petting my sleepy mare, and it was all just so Disney-ish, except nobody was singing.

So...did you start singing?

Good heavens, no! I didn't want any of the poor creatures to suffer.

Aw, I like mousies! Well, not in the house, of course, but they're such cute little guys. And someone on [livejournal.com profile] backyard_birds had some shots of barn swallows the other day ... ah, here they are (http://community.livejournal.com/backyard_birds/461251.html).

They were delightful to watch, with their fat little haunches and satiny fur. It just seemed so right to have them there. They chased each other around a little, and I'm not sure if it was play or squabbling over foraging rights or something.

Stay safe and non-lightning-hit, dear Nightdog. I have to shut it down now, go brush teeth, grab my packed dinner and hit the road.

*sigh*

I love Bachman's, but WAAAAHHHH IT'S TOO NICE OUT TO WORK.

HI NIGHTDOG HELLO!

I am...grading, as usual. Heh. But in good news--I'm very, very close to being finished, entirely finished, with the GenEd section! Yay!

HI PERSPI!

It is getting dark here (again) and a little thundery. There is lots of red all over our weather radars (http://www.wfaa.com/weather/radar), so I think we're really going to get whacked.

:-D

I think I'd rather like to have your weather, though. It's been COLD and grey over here for what feels like weeks and I'm not amused. At all. The only good thing are the lilacs and chestnut trees which are in full bloom right now.

Also, speaking of Texas, did you hear that Mr. Laurie himself is traveling your state at the moment and filming a blues documentary?

I did hear that! Although apparently he's already moved on to New Orleans, I'm actually really glad he got to see the Texas Hill Country, because it's just about the prettiest part of the state. There are some nice photos of what one might see in the area (along with a lot of very typical food) here (http://www.maggiesaustin.com/2009/09/14/weekend-edition-fredericksburg/), and the town's site is here (http://www.luckenbachtexas.com/). I use the term "town" very loosely. *g*

Hee, thanks. When I heard the name of the town, I already suspected some German settlers in its history...

Heh. The Hill Country is full of the descendants of German settlers. For quite a while, German was the third most common language in the state (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_Texas). Lots of Czechs, too -- the Czech Stop (http://www.czechstop.net/home.php) is pretty well-known along I-35 in West, Texas. *g*

I love thunder and lightning. I'm the family maverick who goes outside in it and often will sleep right through it. hee

You seem in better spirits today. I hope the means you're sleeping well. I'm in good spirits cuz my son is on the road home tonight. *\o/*

It's sunny and I've been dreadfully lazy except for playing around with the journal layout. Must get slothful self in gear, though.

My current reading is The War of the Soups and the Sparks (http://cup.columbia.edu/book/978-0-231-13588-7/the-war-of-the-soups-and-the-sparks), which is dense and fascinating stuff.

joe_pike_junior had changed hers and recc'd the site where she found it. I went poking around and found one I really liked. Can't get the title and subtitle text in exactly the color I want and still have all the letters show up, though. So I'll probably keep tinkering a bit with that.

So ... what led you to The War of the Soups and the Sparks?

Which I should totally have specified I meant. Hee.

I love medical histories, and that fit in with a continuing interest in how brain chemistry works. Because it's an overview, it has some tantalizing bits dropped in that aren't fully explained, like how early researchers discovered that morphine significantly affects the vas deferens in mice. I read that and thought, "How the hell did they figure that out? Ask the mouse how it went when he staggered home to Mrs. Mouse with a skinful of dope?" :D

The header: Any photo of House playing his guitar is sheer love. &hearts

Thanks to the wonders of the internet, I've verified that the snake I saw this morning, sunning itself on a bike path, was a baby Pacific Gopher Snake.

The post office looms for me, too. Maybe some frozen yogurt afterward.
