Bright sun -- so nice after yesterday's gloom! 60 degrees (15.55 C), supposed to go up to 74 today, which should be really pleasant.

Hm, need to make some coffee. In the meantime, have a photo of squirrels with coconut shells on their heads. Hee.

The little round, brown birds are back again. It's that time of the morning.

Another partly sunny day looms, with a high of 56. Sweatshirt weather and possibly a white chocolate mocha downtown - the joy of independent coffee shops.

There were some blue jays here earlier, and right now there are some crows out front somewhere having a crow-fest, which was making Chango look around.

A white chocolate mocha sounds delicious!

Corvids are badass. I love how the scrub jays move, the way all their disparate parts fit together when they lean their heads forward and tilt their bodies back on a branch, their little feet gripping tight.

Mishka's is a place where, if you order 'for here' instead of 'to go', you get your coffee in a big glass mug. It's tremendously fun to see where all the foam sits.

I want a coconut shell for my head now. :D

The phone did not ring in the office for two blissful hours this morning. But then the confederacy of moochers showed up and work ground to a halt.

I think WE ALL NEED COCONUT SHELLS. With rum and pina colada mix in them. And little tissue-paper parasols.

;-)

Yes, this! And sunshine, canvas deckchairs and a cabana boy named Raoul to bring us refills of those delicious coconut drinks. Guess you can tell I'm longing for vacation? :D

ZOMG we haven't been to anywhere with a real beach in forever. I sure wouldn't mind going back to the Florida Panhandle ...

Raoul, heh.

If all goes well, Corgiguy and I are going to St. Augustine at the end of May for our first grown-ups-only vacation in 20 years. I'm really looking forward to that.

St. Augustine is beautiful. You will love...
I live about 5-6 hours drive SW from there on the other coast. If you're interested, google Fort Myers, FL.

I think I was in Fort Myers once in college. Really, that's more innocent than it sounds: I competed in College Bowl (sort of like Jeopardy! for brainiacs) and we went to a lot of tournaments in Florida in the course of three years.

Well, it's a small world. It would be so kool to meet you in person, but I can't make the trip. :o(

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I've gotten on here long enough to post and had to get right back off again...even now.

"In other news, Mars announces new Nutty Bounty Bar."

...as Bounty is apparantly not sold in the USA, the joke is that It has a coconut filling covered with milk chocolate

Oooh, yummy! There's a coconut filling and milk chocolate bar with the unappealing name of "Mounds" sold in the U.S. It's far more delicious than the name implies.

Also, did you ever see this, about rules for writing fiction (http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2010/feb/20/ten-rules-for-writing-fiction-part-one)? It's really rather awesome.

And I particularly like Anne Enright's number three: Only bad writers think that their work is really good.

WOW, what a great ... article? Compendium? Whatever. This is terrific!

And I have to say I laughed out loud at one of the COMMENTS --

3. Never use a verb other than "said" to carry dialogue.

I'm not sure about this advice. I was brought up reading Biggles books, and characters were always blurting, gasping, interjecting etc.
I miss those days of innocence when a man could ejaculate loudly in front of his friends without it raising eyebrows.

LOL!

Yes, but I'm not doing without my metaphors and similes, dammit!

*clings*

I loved the one about description being an opinion about the world, because that's one of my favorite tricks. Let a character describe what she sees and you will learn a lot about who she is, how she thinks.

NIGHTDOG BAIT AHOY!

http://phoebeallens.com/

It's a webcam feed of a hummingbird nest.

What?

Well ... because I'm evil, that's why. Really, I thought you'd have figured this out by now.

It has sound, too, and now and then you can hear her make a little cheeping noise.

I'm in trouble now because I discovered the PAUSE button and the temptation to pause and draw? Is very strong. Trick is pausing at Just the Right Moment. I could waste hours trying to get that.

ETA that in any event it may have to wait for a less windy day. I'm almost getting motion sick right now. :-P

(pops in) Hello! There's a webcam of a hibernating plar bear somewhere too, I saw a story about it once. But why would you want to watch a polar bear sleep, is what I want to know?
My kitty always wants to sit on the keyboard when I'm on LJ. I think she wants her own blog.
