Cold rain -- 45 degrees (7.22 Celsius). Slept fairly well, although I had some odd dreams which I can't remember at all now (they were already fading by the time I woke up).

Anyway, here's a bit more of Craig Ferguson, from American On Purpose -- this is from when he was seventeen years old (putting it behind a cut because it's about gender stereotypes, and while I thought it was pretty funny in its adolescent male obliviousness, others might not):

Among my peers, the idea that any normal female would genuinely desire to have sex was dismissed as nonsense. We'd been taught from an early age that sex was shameful and bad, that men wanted it all the time because they were slaves to their appetites, and that women were good, they didn't like or want sex but would allow it in order to have babies, or because they were drunk, or English. No one actually said this out loud, it was just hinted at.

Also, what planet is George Will living on?

Twenty years from now, the country is going to be spending a larger portion of its GDP on health care than it is now for three reasons. We're getting older, and as we age, we get more chronic diseases that interact with one another. Second, we're getting richer; we can afford to buy more medicine. And, third, medicine is becoming more competent. Therefore, we're going to spend more on health care.

I'll just assume that's the imperial "we," kthxbai. Source.

YAY, for sleep! :) *twirls, shows off new seasonal icon*

You know, I think everyone should get a pass when they're seventeen. I was clueless. And, you know, seventeen. That said: Craig Ferguson now, writing about being seventeen? HILARIOUS.

As for me: I just put up a list post and didn't cut it, so if y'all think it's too frightening a thing to have popping up on your f-list, I'll do so. And now I'm going to have some hummus via a red-bell-pepper delivery system, and I'm going to do some doublechecking of percentages with my calculator. :)

ZOMG, PERSPI, SLEEP YAY.

Heh. I had that quote not under a cut originally, and then I just started thinking I don't want to offend anyone who might not find it as funny as I did, so ... yeah.

Mmmm ... hummus!

And I think you might like this icon. ;-D

The quote from Craig Ferguson's book reminded me of one of my g'father's favorite expressions (one I think of often when I have to deal with teenagers) - all of them should be put in a barrel with a bung hole & the bung removed once a day to feed/water them then replace until they turned at least 24.

As for George Will he hasn't been a resident of this planet for a very long time, but then none of the so-called "pundits" have a clue about what life in this country is actually like.

Hee! That's a great quote from your grandfather!

God, yes. This.

Craig gets major points for having changed his views as he grew up. Many men do not.

This NPR piece on the teenage brain this morning cheered me immensely, since I have to live with a teenager:

The Teen Brain: It's Just Not Grown Up Yet (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=124119468&ps=cprs).

ETA: And WTF is up with George Will and that "we" business that does not apply to the rest of us?

Many men do not.

That is the sad truth.

George Will reminds me of Rush Limbaugh, who loudly proclaimed that the health care he got after his heart attack was TEH BEST IN THE WORLD, and therefore we DUN NEED TO CHANGE IT AT ALL. Conveniently ignoring the fact that he's able to AFFORD the best health care in the world, won't be tossed out on his ass if the hospital decides, and won't have to worry about paying the premiums and bills. Because he's a zillionaire. Grrrr.

Some of these people are incredibly divorced from reality, and others apparently just don't care what they say because the mainstream media hardly ever calls them on it. I don't know which is scarier.

[livejournal.com profile] ignipes has a link up at her journal to a criminally wrong-headed piece of reporting in the New York Times in which a "journalist," and it deserves the italics, found all the right experts to agree that depression really isn't that bad and makes one a focused, creative person. Seriously.

George Will comfortably pontificating on money and health care falls into the same category of outrage.

*takes a look*

Wow. So ... that thing that makes people not want to get out of bed in the morning (as just one aspect) is ... a good thing? I don't think this writer or those people have ever been really depressed. I mean really depressed. Yowza.

I'm surprised they didn't drag out Winston Churchill as a GREAT example of what a depressed person can do -- see, you too can WIN WORLD WAR II IF YOU JUST FOCUS! Or maybe they did hold him up as a shining example ... I didn't read far enough to find out.

Or, for that matter, that Hawaii has a system (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/17/health/policy/17hawaii.html) in which everyone who works 20 hours a week gets provided generous health benefits by their employer, which is a much more ambitious fix to the system than congress has come close to considering. *g* The Daily Show had a great couple of pieces on that, a few weeks ago - another highlight was coverage of the RNC's Hawaii meeting, in which Michael Steele announced that it was a serious work meeting and they weren't there for a vacation. While wearing a lei and a Hawaiian shirt.

LOL ZOMG MICHAEL STEELE!

Hee. Now there's one guy who doesn't give a flip about what he says and is obviously laughing all the way to the bank.

I kind of perversely respect the guy for that sheer, blatant lack of caring whether anyone buys it. Of course the fact that my state's only two successful political exports are him and Spiro Agnew...sigh. *g*

Oh, me too! He's so utterly shameless -- he'd have absolutely no problem saying the sky is orange or grass is blue or unicorns live on the moon, and it just tickles the hell out of me that the GOP brought this on themselves.

I much prefer him to those mean-spirited little pissants John Boehner and Eric Cantor and Jim Bunning and ... oh, a bunch of others. *g*

My dreams last night involved being menaced by a horse that looked like a terra-cotta statue come to life. It was one of my dreams where flight is the natural mode of transportation, like walking - I was hovering in the air and managed to speed away.

I've got to get a copy of this book, it seems.

Oooh, that sounds a little like one of Mare's icons!

It's a good book -- a fairly easy read, but it's well-written and very engaging, and I'm really enjoying it.

You might mean this one? Except that the horse doesn't look menacing (well, not to me; I have learned that certain sensitive members of my f-list are menaced by things I find adorable).

It's a piece of art by Odilon Redon.

Yeah, my Roman horse. I found him when we were discussing the Annals.

Just got your note on my post. Alcohol would be nice tonight, but alas, I have none. It's probably just as well.
