Fourth of July
Jul. 4th, 2015 03:12 pmWarm and sunny and humid, as it seems it's been this way forever. Finished Richard Price's The Whites last night and enjoyed it, although I do think it has a tad too many characters. It's a police procedural, and I did like that. The title refers to people that the police protagonists believe have managed to commit terrible crimes and get off scot-free -- the white whales to their Ahabs, as it were. I think it would make a terrific movie, although the only actor I could picture in a role would be Benicio del Toro as the vengeful cop Milton Ramos. I would recommend Price's Lush Life over this one, but this is still a very good character-driven read.
SO ANYWAY. I will probably read Ann Leckie's Ancillary Justice next (finally). The paperback has been sitting in my To Read pile for a while now.
Heard lots of fireworks last night on our walk and saw a few red sparklers in the distance. Some of the concussions sounded like M80s, and Layla kept stopping and looking to see what was going on. The smell of gunpowder was pretty strong. (Yes, fireworks are illegal within our town limits. Doesn't stop people from setting them off every year we've been here. 'Murica! :D)
The Housefic is ALMOST done, and is apparently titled Kingdom Come.
