Saturday Afternoon
Jun. 22nd, 2013 03:50 pmStill reading Americanah; a little over halfway through and it's still very good. Have been watching movies lately, so here's what I've seen --
Premium Rush, the action film with Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the bike messenger in NYC who's delivering a mysterious package that the bad guy wants. Fun to watch -- the bike stunts are nice and Michael Shannon (who was terrific in Take Shelter) is also terrific here as he seems to enjoy himself entirely too much in a silly role.
The Dark Knight Rises -- I liked this a lot, but wow was it LONG.
Hidalgo. Viggo Mortensen. And his horse. I was only sort of half-watching this, but the special effects were very good. And the horse was amazing. :D
City of God. This is the Brazilian film about youth crime and youth gangs in the most violent neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro. It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, as it were -- it's gritty, ugly, and there are a few parts of it that are truly uncomfortable to watch -- but it's terrific filmmaking, and I recommend it wholeheartedly.
That's all I've got. It's warm outside (95, 35 Celsius) and humid. Ugh.
