Restless and out of sorts today for various reasons.

The Secret Lives of Somerset Maugham is shaping up to be very good indeed, with all kinds of wonderful details. One thing I had forgotten is that Maugham studied to become a doctor when he was a very young man, at St. Thomas's Hospital, a teaching hospital in London founded in the twelfth century. This was 1892, so things had advanced somewhat since then, but there were still some aspects to learning we'd find a bit macabre today.

Cut for one of those macabre details ...  )

This was also the place where Maugham really began to realize his bisexuality, and much later, he said of that time, "I tried to persuade myself that I was three-quarters normal and that only a quarter of me was queer -- whereas really it was the other way round."

So. As I said, very good indeed. :-)

Must run some errands today. Will post Housefic when I get back.
