Happy Canada Day to my Canadian friends (there are at least ten of you here that I know of). Bonne fĂȘte!

Overcast and somewhat cooler (86 degrees, 30 degrees Celsius), but humid enough so that it feels as if it's 91. Need to do some housely things today. Still watching Top Gear ... last night was the Bolivia episode, in which they were dropped off in a rainforest and tried to make it through the Atacama Desert without dying from the high altitude.

Anyway, have a couple of interesting stories -- Russian mathematician refuses to take million-dollar prize because it doesn't give enough credit to other researcher, and, via The History Blog, last cavalry flag from Battle of the Little Big Horn to be auctioned off.

Also trying to think through a very small story about Sam Carr.

I actually went to post this in wank_report, in the hope that someone would pick it up for unfunny_business, but it was already there.

From Bioethics Forum -- Preventing Homosexuality (and Uppity Women) in the Womb?

Long story short: a few endocrinologists are treating pregnant women with a Class C steroid called dexamethasone, aimed at their female fetuses that may have a form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH).

Why? Well, it's very simple ...  )

There's also a good write-up at io9.
