A little cloudy but ridiculously warm as always. Political talking heads are talking on TV, lots of lying and obfuscation as usual.

Should start new book today. Am also consulting the Google on various subjects, including runaway slaves in Ancient Rome. ;-)

Okay, not really, but for those interested in the coolly dystopian view of life there's a very nice write-up in the Los Angeles Times on the new edition of Nathanael West's The Day of the Locust, which contains such wonderful lines as:

"But whether he was happy or not it is hard to say. Probably he was neither, just as a plant is neither. He had memories to disturb him, and a plant hasn't, but after the first bad night his memories were quiet."
