1) It is sunny. And hot. Ugh.
2) I am still reading Ancillary Justice. I do like it and it's an impressive feat of world-building, but there have been passages where I'm not sure who is speaking to whom. Whom is speaking to whom? Whatever.
3) Continuing to take Layla on her late-night walks. Which leads to ...
4) Wildlife!
4a) We saw a grey fox!
It was sitting in someone's front yard, under a tree. It must have heard us coming a mile away, yet it didn't run. At first I thought it was a cat, but then I realized the ears were too large (and differently shaped). We stopped, all of about 15 feet away, and I said, "You're not a cat, are you? You're a fox!" It continued to just sit there, so I said "Well, hello little brother." And we watched each other for at least five minutes. Layla was excited and was pulling on her leash, and THE FOX JUST WATCHED.
Finally I guess s/he decided discretion was the best part of valor, and it got to its little fox feet and trotted off (not before turning back to look at us again).
So. GREY FOX, GUYS. Oh my god I was so happy. :D
4b) We saw THREE SCREECH OWLS, and I think two of them were youngsters. next to it, though ...
There were two little screech owls, looking down at Layla and myself, doing that awesomely goofy bobbing-and-weaving thing that owls do. One of them was making very soft trilling sounds; the other was mostly silent. I got the impression they were young because they would bop around and fly to other tree branches, and they were pretty clumsy about it -- like BUMPING INTO THE BRANCH instead of landing cleanly. It took me a while to realize there was a THIRD owl who was keeping his/her back to us and totally ignoring us. I had the distinct feeling that this owl was the adult (he was slightly darker in color and just a bit larger), and that he was thinking "Goddammit, I got stuck watching the kids AGAIN." :D
Layla barked a little and was dancing around a bit, but the little owls seemed completely unfazed. They were as fascinated by us as we were interested in them. We must've stood there for TEN MINUTES, just studying each other. I wrote a terrible poem about it!
Two little screech owls
Sittin' in a tree
A'bobbin' and a'weavin'
Looking at me
Layla jumped up
But they didn't make a sound
Just bobbed up and down
To say "Shush now, hound!"
SEE I TOLD YOU IT WAS TERRIBLE. :D
One of the little ones flew into the other tree and disappeared; the other one crashed into ANOTHER branch, and I finally walked away. The adult owl continued to sit, looking grumpy.
5) We are having our master bath remodeled. I will be so glad when it's done.
Five things make a post.
