Sorry, that was Arthur C Clarke. The actual book 2001 was kind of developed concurrently with the movie and was actually based mostly on a short story Clarke wrote in 1948 called The Sentinel. The first part of the movie where the monolith nudges protohumans to eventual intelligence came from a different short story of his called Encounter in the Dawn.
