Sun finally came out late this afternoon but it's still fairly humid, and we've got a bounteous crop of mosquitoes from all the rain.

Started reading This Republic of Suffering -- [livejournal.com profile] pwcorgigirl, you asked about this book, and my advice after reading 100 pages (just today) is hell yes, buy it or make your library order it. It is fantastic -- vivid and clearly written, pulling in lots of original sources (letters, newspaper reports, advertisements), black and white photos every few pages ... very, very good. There is an absolute wealth of information presented here, but it's not dry at all -- on the contrary, Drew Gilpin Faust (who turns out to be a woman, by the way) brings the subject and these people to life.

So ... yeah. *g*
