1) I saw a female Purple Finch on one of the sunflower seed feeders this afternoon. Beautiful little bird! The white stripe over the eye was super distinctive. :D

2) Grey and dreary, supposed to rain all or most of the day tomorrow. Which we do really need! But still. Rain.

3) I was sorry to see that Hugh Laurie's chocolate Lab has passed away at the venerable age of 17. A very advanced age for a Labrador Retriever! Layla is four; she and Mister Nightdog saw a coyote early this morning on their walk. She growled and huffed at it -- it watched curiously for a moment, then sauntered away.

Huh. So, purple finches ... aren’t purple? I mean, the male really isn’t either. He’s ... red.

I know, right? To me they're not really RED red, either. The Audubon site describes them as more of an old-rose color, and I've seen other folks say they look like they've been dipped head-first in raspberry juice. Really pretty little guys. :D

Nightdog, I am very tired of this dreariness. I mean, I can even handle the snow, but just give me some sun, won't ya?

Honestly, Sils, I don't know what Eliot was on about when he said that April is the cruelest month.* IT'S OBVIOUSLY FEBRUARY. I mean, the mystery and joy of Christmas is long gone, the novelty of the New Year has worn off, and it's just GLOOM ALL THE WAY DOWN. ;-)


*I know, I know, he was talking about depression. BUT STILL. :D

That is a venerable age for any dog, but especially a big breed like a Labrador. He must have had excellent breeding to make it that long.

Today I saw a flowering quince in bloom in a sunny, sheltered spot, and a few of the tiny flowers called Spring Beauties have popped up in the grass. Winter is not over by any means, so these slightly warmer days are a false spring and stuff will most likely get frozen.

Oh, flowering quince is so pretty! Everyone around here called it japonica when I was a little kid. Forsythia, then japonica, were the harbingers of spring, along with jonquils. (I didn't know that jonquils were daffodils until I was a grownup.) :D
