Friday Night

So we were watching this very unmemorable biopic -- De-Lovely, the life of Cole Porter, with Kevin Kline and Ashley Judd as Cole and Linda Porter. And in one musical sequence, there's this very handsome, open-faced young man, smiling and full of life, singing Night and Day in rehearsals with Cole. And I'm looking through the IMDB entry, and ...

... it's John Barrowman. *g*

Damn, he was good.

He's not a great actor, but as a performer, he's outstanding.

This. He was mildly goofy as the young actor, but then he really started to sing and his voice opened up and he just ... came alive. He can really sing.

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-02-06 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
My first reaction to hearing him sing was to quote a comic strip and only half-joke: "That voice! 'Tis like the angels!"

I've got a bunch of his songs on my computer - would you like me to upload any of them?

Hold that thought. Maybe over the weekend. *g*

Is it still snowing?

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-02-06 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! I need to go outside and literally roll in it like a dog.

Agreed. <3

[identity profile] sabra-n.livejournal.com 2010-02-06 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
I believe he released a whole Cole Porter CD. He broke out with a role in Anything Goes.

For real? I'll have to look for that.

The musical numbers in this movie were pretty good -- Natalie Cole did a great version of Every Time You Say Goodbye, but overall it was a really forgettable film.

ETA that here it is! (http://www.amazon.com/Swings-Cole-Porter-John-Barrowman/dp/B0002YLDN2/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1265434188&sr=1-7)

I, uh...may or may not have the De-Lovely soundtrack. :P I find it to be a mixed bag, but "Night and Day" doesn't bother with any BS and just lets the song shine, so it's definitely one of the good tracks.

Yeah, I don't think any of the songs were helped by being stuck in such a lifeless movie. We came in in the middle, so we missed some of the numbers. I did like Sheryl Crow's version of Begin the Beguine.

There are some really terrific covers on the Red Hot + Blue (http://www.amazon.com/Red-Hot-Blue-Tribute-Porter/dp/B000008JUM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1265436195&sr=1-1) tribute CD, especially Lisa Stansfield doing a smokin' Down In the Depths (On the 90th Floor).

Hi! John Barrowman is lots of fun, oh yes.

Me, I'm in bed, and the Mr's reading, and the wind is blowing outside and I'm gonna play some sudoku and go to sleep. See y'all tomorrow!!

Hi Perspi! We're actually in bed, too. We were watching David Letterman and now Mr. N has put his book away (The Maytrees) and is about to go to sleep.

But I'll be awake for a bit. *g*

Hi hi! I am home.

Been home for a while in fact, but Roomie's BF was watching Men Behaving Badly and I joined him for a couple episodes because I'd never seen it before. Pretty good show.

YAY for being safe at home!

I don't think I've ever watched Men Behaving Badly. We watched a couple of repeats of Bones on TNT and then this movie.

I am in a strange good/depressed state tonight, so I'm watching Craig Ferguson, who always tips things toward the "good" side.

Now. Need to go downstairs and wash all this makeup off while commercials are running.

Barrowman is amazing in musical theatre. He did a Sondheim review on Broadway in 2000 with Carol Burnett, George Hern, Bronson Pinchot, and Ruthie Henshal that was a so so good. It's actually worth owning the $20 DVD. And I'm one of those who love him but think his acting is really rather cheesy.

Yep -- the moment when Kline puts his hand on Barrowman's arm is such a lovely, intimate moment in an incongruous setting.

I intensely dislike musicals, but John Barrowman is good enough to make me overcome that. He was made for musical theater.

I had no idea. I've watched some of these links from Talulahk and Licia, and he's just amazingly good.
