Ah, you're right! It's almost as if he's wearing sheets of gold plate. I actually had not noticed that on Twitter (I've added a credit to where I saw this work today). I thought it was an amazing piece, filled with dark power.
I've seen small pieces, nothing big. There's a British artist I follow on Twitter who does some work with gold leaf (of course I can't recall her name at the moment -- it's Jackie something). :-)
ETA that here she is -- Jackie Morris. There's a bit of gold leaf there, but I'd have to poke around more to find what I was really thinking of.
Looking at the artist's other work he was definitely influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, but in a good way.
The painting you posted reminds me of the heaviest of the church statuary one sees in Europe, covered in gold looted from the Americas. The painting is brilliant on multiple levels.
My apologies for the double reply but I thought I would mention that it turns out I have seen several of the artist's works before, I merely didn't recognise the name. He evidently had a sense of humour!
