Saddened today to see that the great actor Richard Griffiths has passed away, aged only 65. He was just wonderful as Hector in Bennett's The History Boys.

Oh my god yes, there is SO MUCH TO BE TROUBLED BY in the play. I saw the movie first and had only the most general idea as to what it was about, and found myself going "Wait, WHAT? He's doing WHAT to the boys on the motorbike?" Then I read the play, and in addition to all the WHAT THE HELL stuff, I was surprised to see that Alan Bennett had intended the character of Irwin to be based on Niall Ferguson, whom he apparently hates with the fiery passion of a thousand burning suns. Add to all this the shocking ending (I was shocked, anyway), and wow, it's a big old mess of trouble. But the dialogue and acting are just amazing, and I stop and watch it whenever it turns up on a movie channel.
