New Year Tuesday

Back from traveling; we were in Michigan for New Year's Eve, and it was cold. Very cold. And snowy.

The last book I read for 2012 was China Miéville's The City & The City (I loved it -- it is astoundingly inventive and mysterious and I would read more of the adventures of Inspector Tyador Borlú in a heartbeat). The first book for 2013 will be Louise Erdrich's The Round House, which I started reading on the plane.

Dunno about Michigan, but we were minus-8 F or thereabouts last night. It was a good night to not go anywhere.

That's respectably cold. :D (For me true cold starts below -25C, which is colder still, but then I am much farther north and higher up. Also, such weather is completely normal here, and this year I've acclimated particularly well for some reason. We had several days of -30 to -32 as daily highs and I was unbothered by it, which is nice. There's a lot of winter still before us, and much room for deep cold yet.)

Michigan wasn't as cold as the Plains States, though we didn't warm up much below the low 20s. And depending on where you were, there was a 7 inch snowfall followed by another 2 inch snowfall two days later.

Oh, and I closed out 2012 by finishing Richard Ford's "Canada," and began reading "Bring Up The Dead" for New Year's.

I'm so jealous of your freezing temperature! Lately I'm living in an oven! But is no good to start a year with such a bad sentiment, so I'm letting this go... :D

I made a list of books I want to read, so far I bought...none...

*g* It ranged, I believe, from the low 'teens to the low 20s. Which is not actually that terrible, but I'm used to it being in the 20s in the morning and then shooting up to the 40s in the afternoon. And in Michigan, it just stays frozen. The snow was pretty, though -- there was about four to five inches on the ground.

Oh my god, I LOVED Canada. Both it and Bring Up the Dead would definitely go on my (imaginary) "Best of 2012" list. *g*

We were vaguely equidistant between Detroit and Ann Arbor. It didn't snow while we were there, but there was a good four to five inches on the ground.

Well, it is nice to be back home where at least it will get above freezing for part of the day! :D

I haven't bought any new books since the first! This must be remedied. *g*

Canada was definitely awesome. And I can see why he spent 20 years on it. It's certainly not a simply-plotted or written novel.

I already knew Bring UP The Dead would be awesome.

(I put them both on my library reserve list while going down the NYTimes best of book list saying: Oooh. haven't read that yet! Or that. Or that ...)
