Tell Me What's the Word

The word, of course, is Word Up! by Cameo, and it's what I was listening to on Jack.FM in the car. And since who couldn't use a little funk with some power brass on a hot Sunday afternoon, here it is. Yes, chiclets, this is what a lot of kids who used to be your age were dancing to in the '80s.

And yes, that's Geordi LaForge (heh) as the police detective.

Is there any 80s funk groove not improved by the appearance of a red codpiece?

First I was all like, WTF? I was a kid in the 80s, and I have no memory of this. Then I noticed (on the page you kindly linked) that it's actually from 1986. Which means after I Became A Total Nerd in 1984. No wonder.

My goodness! I SHOULD recognize this, I was a tween in 1986, but I don't. I remember the era well, though. I cracked up when TaigaSis told me that she has "Funky Called Medina" on her iPod because it has a good beat for jogging :)

Ahh, I never would have recognized him!

They used it in a lot of step aerobic classes I took back in the day.

I was 14 in 1986, and I did see this video, and let me tell you, I was scandalized. And offended. And I hated, hated, hated this song because it was just about SEX and RANDOM HOOKUPS and I took all that sort of thing Very Seriously then.

Now I just wanna dance to it, and am secure in knowing that it will not in fact corrupt my impressionable young mind.

I recognized him because we watched a lot of Reading Rainbow, which he hosted, when Corgikid was a wee tot. But that was a few years after the video was made. :)

I agree that nerds are born, but I started living as one full time when I began college. I quit watching TV overnight, and lost contact with fashion in music, dress and everything else.
And 28 is young (at least seen from me now).

It was a very odd class. :-)
