Heh, I really liked the "mice with brains" thing. The other ... you know, I can understand being too frightened to lie, for fear of your life or your own family. But to say that that's what God wants ... there's an old joke that I think applies here (you may have heard it). A man is warned that a great flood is coming, and that he should flee with his neighbors, but the man says "God will save me." The flood sweeps away everything in its path, and the man is left bobbing in an inland sea. A boat full of survivors comes by, and he's urged to get into it, but the man says "No, I'm trusting in God to save me." But the man drowns, and when he stands before God he's angry and says "God, why didn't you save me?" And God says "You idiot, why do you think I sent the boat?"*
All of which is to say that perhaps lying is actually what God would WANT YOU TO DO in that circumstance. And that's presupposing that there is a God, and that if there is, human beings could presume to know His or Her or Its mind.
And I'm ranting. I'll stop now. :-D
*Actually it's a much longer joke, with numerous opportunities for the man to save himself. I cut it way down.
